As a result of population growth and the establishment of new businesses, Schönefeld is expected to experience increased traffic congestion. The mobility concept aims to promote sustainable, safe, and people-centered mobility, and to improve the connectivity and accessibility of the municipality’s districts.
The concept will integrate the needs of all population groups, enhance local mobility and environmental transportation, and ensure that individual traffic is managed in a compatible way. The implementation of the Schönefeld Nord master plan and the creation of attractive, climate-resilient public spaces will provide a foundation for future mobility development.
A key aspect is the consideration of the extension of U-Bahn Line 7 from Berlin to Schönefeld. This extension will be incorporated into the planning to further improve regional mobility.
The mobility concept primarily focuses on expanding and strengthening the mobility network with an emphasis on environmental transportation (a combination of walking, cycling, and public transport) and aims to balance the interests of traffic, housing, and quality of stay. The following sub-goals are defined:
- Improvement of the Integration and Connectivity of Different Modes of Transportation
- Enhancement of Traffic Infrastructure Within the Municipality
- Promotion and Expansion of the Bus Network
- Encouragement of Cycling
- Investigation and Implementation of New Transportation Modes and Technologies
- Reduction of Through Traffic in Residential Areas, with a Focus on Pedestrians, Cyclists, Public Transport, and Delivery Traffic
- Relief of Residential Areas from Through Traffic by Adjusting and Expanding the Road Network
- Protection of Pedestrian Traffic from Disruptions
- Balancing the Needs of the Airport with the Interests of Residents
These goals are intended to ensure that mobility development in Schönefeld is sustainable and improves the quality of life for residents while optimizing regional growth dynamics.
In July, traffic counts were conducted in the Schönefeld district and the surrounding municipality. This included compiling and analyzing existing traffic data and studies on the current traffic situation to identify weaknesses and potential opportunities. In September, household surveys will follow to assess mobility behavior, satisfaction with the existing traffic system, and future wishes.
Businesses will also be surveyed to analyze commuting behavior and gather support for sustainable mobility solutions. Additionally, the analysis of parking supply and demand will be carried out to develop concepts for optimization, such as parking management and Park+Ride systems. Public transport surveys will be conducted to evaluate frequency, capacity, and accessibility of public transportation and to identify measures to enhance its attractiveness.
Based on these results, specific needs for action will be identified and prioritized, considering criteria such as effectiveness, cost, feasibility, and acceptance.
A catalog of measures will be created, encompassing various solutions. These include promoting cycling, expanding public transportation, traffic calming, and introducing e-mobility options alongside improving public charging infrastructure. These measures will be evaluated and prioritized according to a phased implementation plan with short-, medium-, and long-term steps.
Through these structured and data-driven approaches, an effective and sustainable mobility concept for the Schönefeld municipality can be developed, addressing the diverse needs of the districts and facilitating a successful mobility transition. The concept is expected to be finalized by the end of 2025.
