Under the title “New Suburbanity? Innovative Urban Development in Schönefeld”, 15 students from TU Berlin are currently analyzing the spatial conditions in Schönefeld. Until spring 2025, they will be developing ideas and concepts for the planned new residential quarter Schönefeld Nord.
The project is part of the Bachelor’s program in Urban and Regional Planning and is conducted in close collaboration with DSK GmbH, which initiated the project and supports the students as consultants and mediators.
The basis for the students’ work is the winning master plan design for Schönefeld Nord from 2022, developed by the firms Reicher Haase Assoziierte, Carla Lo Landschaftsarchitektur, and Lindschulte Verkehrsplanung. These offices are currently refining the master plan, which serves as a foundation for further development.
Working in small groups, the students will create “measure fact sheets”, each addressing specific key topics, such as Mobility and sustainable transportation solutions, Public spaces and green infrastructure, Strengthening social communities. The next step involves developing implementation strategies for selected focus areas within the neighborhood. These individual measures will ultimately be combined into a comprehensive vision for Schönefeld Nord—showcasing an integrated, future-oriented, and sustainable approach to urban planning in the 21st century.
This initiative provides TU Berlin students with an opportunity to tackle real urban planning challenges and gain hands-on experience in shaping the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region. The final results will be presented to the municipality of Schönefeld, the planning teams, and DSK in March 2025 and will also be made publicly accessible.
